“All of the following are the opening lines of published short stories, some of them famous. Pick one and use it to write the first few paragraphs of a story. Write fast.

• My classroom was on the first, next to the nun’s lounge.
• She stood with her black face some six inches from moist window-pane and wondered when on earth it would ever stop raining.
• Foreman likes to hoist the new ones up, see what they’re made of.
• There had been some discussion of death.
• It was Sunday–not a day but rather a gap between two other days.”
