Welcome to our second Saturday Workshop! Since we did fiction last week, let’s do poetry this week!
Remember to keep in mind our Workshop Best Practices as you approach commenting on each others’ work. As always, you are encouraged to include your responses to any daily prompt in the comments, but I will only guarantee my own feedback on responses to Saturday prompts.
This Saturday we will be working with another prompt from Imaginative Writing.
Try This 10.23
Write four serious free-verse stanzas about one of these:
(Burroway, pg. 322)
- sex
- religion
- birth
- war
Alternatively, do this one instead:
Try This 10.24
Write a funny poem about one of the following:
(Burroway, pg. 324)
- sex
- religion
- birth
- war
My Response
I chose to do Try This 10.23, and picked religion as my subject. I’m not sure if I should continue working with this start of a poem, what are your thoughts?
Confession
like guilt Our Savior Jesus Christ suffered and died for us we revere your martyrdom I detest all my sins I detest myself I, who cannot carry your crown of thorns for you. like fear I dread the loss of Heaven we desire your love I fear the pains of Hell if death is not relief claw desperately for ease rather than torment. like penitence because of thy just punishments we adore your tyranny Thee, my God, who art all good and deserving of all my love learn from Job your helplessness is nothing to Him, his love is for greater things. like childhood Father of mercy we do not submit to you I have sinned against you and am no longer worthy to be called your child the prodigal sons we, who raised in your empire, reject it.
