Daily Prompt #8

Another Tuesday Chooseday! Again, that means you choose what genre you use to respond to this prompt—fiction, poetry, non-fiction, or some combination thereof. As always, please feel free to include your response in the comments!

Characters Via Objects

For today’s prompt, think of a small, sentimentally precious object. If you are doing non-fiction, pick some keepsake from your childhood that you treasured. Now, use this object to construct a character profile. You can do this either as a sort of list or notes, or working with it actively as part of a piece. But consider the following:

  • What does it say about the character that this object is so precious?
  • Where did this object come from? Was it a gift?
  • Does this character take the object everywhere with them? Hide it somewhere safe? Keep it by their bed?
  • What does this object tell the reader about the character’s life situation—family, financials, geographic location, etc.

Don’t overthink it! Start by only giving yourself 10 or 15 minutes to write. Is this the germ of a bigger story? A character for a project you’re working on?
